Gastroenterology
What is a
Gastroenterologist?
Gastroenterology
provides comprehensive clinical services related to diseases of the digestive
tract, liver and pancreas. Outpatient consultation, as well as diagnostic
and therapeutic endoscopic services, are provided by these specialists.
Endoscopic instruments are slender, flexible, lighted tubes that allow
for the examination and treatment of the esophagus, stomach, intestinal
track and bile ducts. Acute and ongoing care is provided for such conditions
as gastrointestinal bleeding, peptic ulcer disease, heartburn and reflux,
swallowing difficulties, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative
colitis and Crohn's disease), irritable bowel syndrome, and intestinal
dysfunction. Detection and prevention of colon cancer accounts for a significant
part of a gastroenterlogist's practice.
